contributor and sandy berger former adviser under president clinton. let me start with you. mike mcphal, you workd with him during the clinton years. he took away from the press conference that putin doesn't know what to do next. do you think that's the case, that putin actually, while he's trying to show confidence, he may have acted emotionally and now doesn't have a plan b? >> putin was very angry at what happened in kiev. yanukovych mishandled the situation. >> let putin down. >> let putin down. he sees a western hand behind everything. so, things did not play out as he wanted. he is now seeing sort of the last piece of the former soviet empire falling away. so, it's a bit of desperation. and so i think in some sense, this is a reactive act, but it's dangerous. he's there. and we have to make it very clear to him that he has a fundamental choice here. >> right. >> if he stays on this path, he faces isolation and a very bad future. if he gets off this path, he can redeem the investment of sochi. >> sure. >> and be part of the international community. >> it seems it's political

, right? there were very similar criticisms coming from mccain about president clinton and his foreign policy. of course, they ignored the bush record, and they get very annoyed when we talk about the bush record. but it is worth considering a president who dressed up in the oval office who just launched a war that was the biggest foreign policy disaster since vietnam. for serious republicans, and for some reason, you know, people in the media still consider senator graham to be a serious foreign policy person in spite of the comments he just made, you know, senator graham obviously has forgotten one of his heroes. ronald reagan had a chance to be tough against the soviets when they rolled in tanks in poland during the solidarity crisis, and he backed down. he did not in fact punish people who killed americans when the marines died in beirut. he was a hero of the cold war. he ended up in republican version of events winning the cold war single handedly. they have to ask themselves if they are serious about foreign policy, where is the consistency. >> well, michelle, i want to go back t

after the clinton administration and congress last raised the gas tax. that was 21 years ago when gasoline was $1.08 and i wonder if barack had even met michelle and there it remained for 21 years. due to inflation and fuel economy increases, the average cost per mile that the american motorist pays to the federal government for transportation has been cut in half. i went on the budget and the ways and means committee the last eight years in order to deal with this issue, but frankly i'm tired of waiting. i introduced a gas tax increase phased in over three years to fully fund a six-year re-authorization. was pleased to be joined by friends during my bill introduction by the u.s. chamber, the afl-cio, truckers and a.a.a., transit, local government, environmentalists, road builders. i find it hard to say people will say this will be a heavy lift because there's little support for it. when chairman camp offered $150 billion last week in his tax reform bill, what president obama suggested $300 billion, where was their broad base of support? maybe that's why both proposals were called
